HYDERABAD: The issue of free power supply to farmers figured prominently at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday in light of criticism of the Government's move that the benefit will be restricted to only those farmers who install capacitors and frictionless foot-valves. While no decision was taken on this issue, the Cabinet appreciated the efforts put in by the staff of Andhra Pradesh Transco, Andhra Pradesh Genco and the four distribution companies for the success of the programme. Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, reportedly informed the Ministers that he faced a number of queries on the free power supply scheme for farmers from the Punjab Chief Minister and Power Ministers of Congress-ruled States at the recently concluded AICC plenary in Hyderabad. They wanted to know how Andhra Pradesh could implement the scheme.
Hard work
Dr. Reddy attributed it to the commitment and constant direction from the Government and the hard work put in by the power sector employees. According to sources, the Ministers denounced the Telugu Desam leaders for waxing eloquent about the utilisation of Godavari waters and changing their stand from one district to another during their padayatra. The Chief Minister and the Ministers said these leaders were speaking about confining the benefit from Pranahita-Chevella canal to the district in which they were undertaking the padayatra. On the first day, they wanted water from Pranahita to be supplied only to Adilabad and on the second day to Karimnagar.
