Special Correspondent

13 districts to be covered under the programme

  • Use of machines not to be allowed in the works
  • Permanent assets like laying of cement roads and construction of buildings should not be taken up

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asserted that the Government will take all steps to ensure that there is no misuse in the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi will launch the scheme at Bandameeda Palli, Anantapur district, on Thursday. It will be implemented in 13 districts in the State.

Dr. Reddy told reporters here on Wednesday that use of machines would not be permitted in the programme and warned anybody doing so of stringent action. The programme would be extended to other districts, except Hyderabad, in a phased manner in the next three to four years.

    Job guarantee

He said the NREG Act 2005 provided legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled and manual work in the districts notified by the Centre.

A labourer could earn Rs.80 by working seven hours a day under the scheme which would be implemented in Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar, Warangal, Khammam, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Nizamabad, Kadapa, Anantapur, Chttoor and Vizianagaram districts.

During the just-concluded Collectors' conference, the Chief Minister had made it clear that providing employment alone was the main criterion under the scheme and permanent assets like laying cement roads, construction of buildings should not be taken up.
