First South India hands-on micro neurosurgery course

CHENNAI: The Advanced Neurosurgical Institute (ANI), Chennai, is organising the first South India hands-on micro neurosurgery course for three days.

The course is being organised in association with the Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education, the training wing of the Johnson and Johnson's medical division. D.K. Sridhar, chief neurosurgeon, ANI and course convener, said modern neurosurgery involved usage of operating microscope for illumination and magnification, so that the neurosurgeon had better vision of structures at the depth, and could clearly distinguish between normal and abnormal.

This allowed the surgeon to dissect and separate without damage to the surrounding normal nerves and blood vessels, any abnormal tissue including tumours.

The course taught with participation of international faculty allows the participants to try and develop suturing and dissection techniques, which they can apply in their respective practices.
