Mulayam's district to get lion safari

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's home district of Etawah will soon feature a lion safari as one of its tourist attractions.

The Central Zoo authority (CZA) has already given conditional clearance to the lion safari and it will be set up in the 150-hectare Fischer forest in the district, officials said.

``The CZA has given conditional clearance for setting up lion safari in Etawah and with the Supreme Court clearance, required for setting up a new zoo in the country, also expected later this week, work on it would begin soon,'' Principal Chief Conservator (Forests) B. K. Patnaik said.

The CZA has set a condition that the State would have to set up an additional breeding centre for lions, and officials here say such a centre was in the offing.

Chief Wildlife Warden Mohammed Ahsan said the required breeding centre would be set up on the lines of other safaris in the country.

The State would have to create a separate fund for the zoo and sanction veterinary experts for the smooth running of the lion safari, he said.

Mr. Ahsan said talks had already been initiated to procure five to seven lions for the safari project and said it is expected to be operational in a year's time. PTI
