World Cup qualifiers turn to technology

Sports Reporter

Chennai : Representatives from four ICC Associate Member countries, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Bermuda which qualified for the 2007 World Cup, visited the city for a one-week match analysis training workshop from January 26 to February 1.

The High Performance Program was initiated by Richard Done, the ICC's High Performance Manager, and conducted by Chennai-based Meru Sports Technology Services.

The representatives underwent training in SCOREMate (match analysis software), SiliconCOACH (video analysis tool which helps in assessing and refining a player's technique) and Timewarp (a program that gives immediate feedback during practice or matches).

"The idea is to provide as much information and data as possible to these nations, so they can be adequately prepared for the 2007 World Cup," said Mr. Done during the press conference.

The initiative has been co-funded by the four countries (The ICC has allotted $500,000 to the countries that have qualified for the World Cup, for development) and the ICC's High Performance Program fund.

"We will get to practically test what we have learnt during the under-19 World Cup," said Adrian Birrell from Ireland, while Scotland's Steve Seligmann said, "We don't want to just take part in the World Cup, we want to compete."

For Canada's Derek Perrera the workshop looked to be a powerful tool for analysis, while Bermuda's Lorenzo Tucker was optimistic on the training taking them to the next level.

S. Ramakrishnan (Ramky), Head of Meru Sports Technology Services, is the video analyst of the Indian cricket team.
