"Include all eligible voters in final list"

Staff Reporter

Collector's advice to leaders of political parties

THENI: Representatives of political parties and their leaders should verify draft electoral rolls meticulously and bring shortcomings, if any, to the notice of electoral officers within the specified time. They should take efforts to include all eligible voters in the final list, Collector Rajesh Lakhoni, said.

He was addressing an all-party meeting held at the Collectorate on Tuesday.

After reorganisation, there were 993 polling stations in the district — 212 in Periakulam, 214 in Theni, 186 in Bodinayakkanur, 175 in Cumbum and 206 in Andipatti Assembly constituencies.

Of this, 105 are auxiliary polling stations.

As per draft electoral rolls, the total number of voters is 8,54,984 including 4,17,244 men and 4,37,740 women.

There are 1,79,805 voters in Periakulam, 1,88,442 in Theni, 1,57,114 in Bodinayakkanur, 1,55,480 in Cumbum and 1,74, 143 in Andipatti Assembly constituencies.

Special campaign for enrolment would be held on February 4. Disposal of claims would be done on February 16.

Preparation and printing of supplements of additions, deletions and corrections would take place on February 24.

S.N. Veerasamy, district secretary, Bharathiya Janata Party, said that his and family members' names were not included in the draft rolls despite repeated representations and verification by officials.

"Was there any ulterior motive behind deletion of my name," he asked. His name was missing from the list during the previous Parliamentary election also.

Mr. Lakhoni advised officials to verify his complaint and asked Mr. Veerasamy to contact responsible officer in the rank of Tahsildar or Revenue Divisional Officer for proper reply.

Many political leaders urged the officials to be impartial and objective in enrolling names in the list.

Rajya Sabha MP Thangathamizh Selvan (AIADMK) said there was lack of manpower in many polling stations, particularly on hills.

Officials should be present in all polling stations up to February 11 to enable voters to enrol their names. One day to undertake a special campaign for enrolment was insufficient to enrol all voters; one more day could be arranged. Certificate should not be insisted for age proof, he said. The Collector said record of age in ration card would be enough.
