Hurdles for road-widening
The delay in widening the Sahodaran Ayyappan Road is an apt example of obstacles facing road development in Kochi.
Ten years has passed since the road-widening work started. But one-third of the four-km-long four-lane road continues to be two-lane, because of the reluctance of landowners in surrendering land. The Corporation of Kochi has been for long saying that it needs Rs.6 crores to compensate landowners. They say that the State Government is reluctant to pay the amount.
Though the Public Works Department had made a proposal to take over the road, the Corporation was unwilling to hand it over, saying that they wanted to convert it into a `model road'.
