YOUNG ENTHUSIAST: Fish species of vibrant colours are displayed at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi as part of the India International Aqua Show that began on Thusday Photo: Vipinchandran
The grandeur of life under water is on display at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi. It is an altogether different world under water. The fishery life comes with vibrant colours and in a variety of shapes that makes the spectator spellbound. From sharks, which remind one of the gory death of swimmers in some beaches in the West as shown in the Jaws movies, to varieties of puffer fish which recently swarmed into the fishing nets and lives of fishermen of the coastal waters of the State and a wide range of colourful ornamental fish are there at the ornamental fish exhibition that began at the stadium on Thursday. The Lakshadweep stall has captured the stunning colours and life of the marine ornamental fish as moon rashes, parrot fishes, scorpion fish, sea cucumber are attracting visitors in large numbers from the opening hours of the exhibition. Do you want to copy or bring in a miniature of a shipwreck a la Titanic to your drawing rooms and aquarium tanks? One of the entrepreneurs taking part in the exhibition has brought "artefacts" of some shipwrecks for those who are particular about giving a classic touch to their aquariums. Arawana, a silver-coloured fish variety which some believe to bring good luck, would certainly cost you a fortune. The single fish fetches an astonishing price of Rs.25,000. Clown fish, which live in the company of coral reefs, are there at the exhibition. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, which successfully developed the breeding techniques of the fish, has displayed various stages of the offspring of the parent pair that was brought from Andaman Islands. Several research institutions including the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, the School of Industrial Fisheries of the Cochin University of Science and Technology and some city colleges have set up stalls at the exhibition. The exhibition will conclude on February 7.
