Singing a different tune

The change was too obvious to be explained away with a slant. Three MLAs belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) P. Jayarajan and M.V. Jayarajan and P.K. Sreemathi, used the platform of a seminar on development in Kannur to air their views that apparently were not in tune with their party's stated opinion on the subject.

No surprise then that the MLAs' comments hogged the media limelight.

The Koothuparamba MLA was the first to sound a different note on the proposed expressway.

The expressway project was the only answer to the road traffic problems the State had been facing, he said. Those who were opposing the project were blowing out of proportion its negative aspects, he pointed out.

Jayarajan gave a lighter touch to the change of mindset when he said that perhaps the idea of expressway would not have drawn as much criticism if it had been christened a bypass or something else.

Equally outspoken was Ms. Sreemathi in her defence of the expressway. The MLAs' comments on the expressway has triggered a public talk on the change of attitude to the project.

There is a strong view that the change reflected the party's perception that it would be heading the Government after the coming Assembly polls.
