NAGAPATTINAM: Stern action will be taken against persons involved in prohibition offences, said R.Tamil Chandran, Superintendent of Police, Nagapattinam, here on Wednesday. Talking to mediapersons, Mr Tamil Chandran, who took charge as the SP of Nagapattinam recently, said that his priority would be wiping illicit arrack and anti-social elements and also to achieve good crime detection in the Cauvery delta region of the district. He pointed out that 90 prohibition cases were registered against 78 persons including 11 women during the three-day intensive prohibition raids conducted from January 29 to 31 in various parts of the district. The police force led by Ravindran, Additional Superintendent of Police (prohibition), was involved in the prohibition raids in Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Sirkazhi and Mayiladuturai areas. The SP said that the crime rate came down drastically and the detection rate had gone up. He pointed out that special police teams had been formed to nab the bootleggers who smuggled liquor to various parts of the district from Karaikal.
