Ganguly draws with Lopez

Gibraltar: Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly remained in contention for a place among prize winners after drawing with Juan Belon Lopez of Spain in the ninth and penultimate round of Gibtele.com Masters chess tournament here on Thursday.

Grandmaster and former junior World champion Kiril Georgiev of Bulgaria almost assured himself of title with another splendid effort against Russian GM Sergey Volkov in the ninth round. With seven wins in nine games, Georgiev moved to eight points and stretched his lead to a full point over the nearest Emil Sutovsky of Israel. A pack of five players, including third seed Nigel Short of England, is in joint third spot, and Ganguly is in the next group of six pointers.
