Services, U.P. win recurve titles

KOLKATA: Archers from Services and Uttar Pradesh ruled the roost in the team championship of the recurve section on the concluding day of the 26th senior National championship at the SAI, Eastern Centre, here on Thursday.

Last year's runner-up, the Service men's team, comprising Tarundeep Rai, Majhi Sawaiyan, Robin Hansda and Gurucharan Besra, turned the table on the defending champion Jharkhand, consisting of Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee, Gautam Singh Sardar and Prabhat Kandir, 242-241. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) took the bronze medal beating UP 240-232.

In the ladies final also last year's runner-up Uttar Pradesh women, comprising Sumangla, Sushma, Punya Prabha and Renu, outshot a new-look Jharkhand team, consisting of Laxmi Rani Mahji, Reshma Banerjee, Lalrem Rosie and Catharine, 227-219. The third place went to Assam which surprised Manipur 226-217.

The same story continued in the men's compound division as well with the defending champion Andhra Pradesh failing to get the better of ITBP in the final. Naresh Damor, Shivnath Nagesia, Awadesh Raghav and Ved Kumar combined to beat AP team represented by C.H. Lenin, Syed Shareefuddin, T. Rahul and C.H. Nagarjuna in the tie-breaker after the two teams were locked at 245 after each team shot 27 arrows.

In the three-arrow shoot off, ITBP garnered 28 as against AP's 25 to emerge the winner. Services won the bronze medal beating Jharkhand 252-249.

Incidentally, Services' 252 is a new National mark surpassing 240 set by AP last year. Santosh Tamang, Arun Sharma, Robin Gurung and Chungda Sherpa turned out for Services.

The results:

Team championship: men's recurve final: Services 242 bt Jharkhand 241. 3rd: place: ITBP 240 bt UP 232. Semifinals: Jharkhand 248 bt ITBP 240; Services 238 bt UP 235.

Women's final: UP 227 bt Jharkhand 219. 3rd place: Assam 226 bt Manipur 217. Semifinals: UP 231 bt Assam 214; Jharkhand 238 bt Manipur 220.

Men's compound final: ITBP 245 (28) bt AP 245 (25). 3rd place: Services 252 bt Jharkhand 249. Semifinals: ITBP 247 bt Jharkhand 246; AP 245 bt Services 240.
