Lok Adalat settles 16 cases

CHENNAI: A total of 16 cases involving a settlement amount of Rs. 17.8 crore was settled at a debts recovery Lok Adalat, organised by the Debts Recovery Tribunal-I, here on Tuesday.

According to the DRT-I presiding officer, Harihar P. Chaturvedi, 42 pending cases involving a claim amount of about Rs. 42 crore had been taken up for disposal. Of the settled amount, Rs. 13.57 crore was recovered on the spot while Rs. 4.29 crore would be payable by defaulters within a period specified in the awards.

The Adalat panel was chaired by the former judge of the Madras High Court, Justice S. Marimuthu.

With this, the DRT-I has recovered over Rs. 1,320 crore since its inception in October 1996.

This is the 26th Lok Adalat conducted in association with the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority.

A total of Rs. 162 crore had been collected through these Adalats, Mr. Chaturvedi said. — Special Correspondent

Environmental award presented

CHENNAI: Chairman of the National Biodiversity Authority S. Kannaiyan on Monday received the Loyola Environmental Award instituted by the School of Entomology and Centre for Natural Resources Management. The award was presented to Prof. Kannaiyan at the inaugural session of the national conference on biodiversity held at Loyola College, in honour of his sustained interest in protecting environment and creating awareness for the benefit of mankind. — Special Correspondent

DYFI to hold demonstrations

CHENNAI: The Democratic Youth Federation of India would hold demonstrations before government offices across the State on February 13 to demand creation of employment opportunities and job security.

The president of the Tamilnadu State Committee, S.K. Mahendran, said chief demands include filling of vacant posts, renewed distribution of unemployment benefit, extended implementation of the Employment Guarantee Scheme and the creation of more opportunities for skilled labour. S. Kannan, secretary, said outsourcing did not pertain to information technology alone but had implications for manufacturing as well.

This had affected the skilled labour force very badly.

Training programme

CHENNAI: A two-day training programme for employers/Employees Provident Fund members will be conducted by the EPF organisation through the Zonal Training Institute (SZ), Chennai, on February 20 and 21. A course fee of Rs 1,000 per participant will be charged. Employers, complying with the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, and desirous of deputing their representatives may register their names. Entrepreneurship programme

CHENNAI: Small Industries Service Institute has organised a month-long entrepreneurship development programme on fashion garments in Chennai, starting from February 8.

The objective of the programme is to give an opportunity to unemployed and interested entrepreneurs to start their business in fashion garments.

Two commit suicide

Ramanathapuram: Two persons of a family committed suicide at Ramasamy patty near Kamudhi on Thursday.

Sources said Selvi (35), wife of Subramanian, who consumed poison due to severe stomach pain, died at the hospital here.

Following this, her husband Subramanian consumed poison and died at the hospital.

13 hospitalised

BODI: Thirteen persons in Dombuserry and Tiruchendur near here were hospitalised for vomiting and diarrhoea on Wednesday

Residents of Tiruchendur were admitted in Veerapandi Primary Health Centre, patients of Kodangipatti in Dombuserry PHC and four persons in Bodi Government Hospital.

Many of these villagers were affected by water borne diseases.

Deputy Director of Health Services K. Kulandaisamy said two teams of doctors rushed to the villages and gave first aid to patients. Collector Rajesh Lakhoni monitored preventive measures being taken.

He ordered panchayat officials to inspect water bodies and check drinking water pipeline.

Doctors suspected that water contamination might be the reason for outbreak of the disease.

Information centre

DINDIGUL: An information centre was opened at the election office at the Collectorate and at the Revenue Divisional Office in Dindigul and Palani to enable voters to lodge their complaints, if any, and clarify their doubts, said Collector S. Murugaia.

In a release here on Wednesday, he said people could contact these centres for inclusion or deletion of names in the voter list and voter identity card. The centre would handle grievances of political parties also.

Plea for special leave

Ramanathapuram: The Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers have urged the Government to give special casual leave on February 7,8 and 9 to facilitate government employees and teachers attend the State-level conference to be held in Chennai on February 8.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, its general secretary S. Eswaran, said over two lakh employees would attend the meet.

Free medical camp

MADURAI: Over 200 persons benefited from a free multi-speciality medical camp organised by Sri Visweswara Medical College Hospital at Kottaiyur in Sivaganga district on January 29.

Consultation was provided to patients by specialists in cardiology, oncology, neurology and general medicine.

According to a press release, the Sri Visweswara Medical College Hospital plans to conduct similar camps on a monthly basis.

Ration for forest staff

TIRUNELVELI: Distribution of ration at subsidised rate for the forest personnel began on Thursday. District Forest Officer H. Venu Prasad inaugurated the distribution of 20 kg of rice, 2 kg sugar, 2 kg wheat and four kg black gram to each ranger, forester and other field staff at his office on the Collectorate premises.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 130.20 feet with an inflow of 343 cusecs and a discharge of 600 of cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 66.93 feet with an inflow of 344 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 6858 mcft.

Vacancy for doctors

Udhagamandalam: The Nilgiris Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar has in a press note issued here on Thursday stated that the process of filling up of medical officers vacancies in Primary Health Centres and Government hospitals with contract medical consultants was now on. Application forms could be obtained from the Deputy Director of Health Services on all working days between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The selection of the candidates would be done on the second and fourth Mondays by an ad-hoc committee headed by the Collector. Association's plea

Udhagamandalam: The Hindu Community Welfare Association has urged the district administration to improve the basic amenities at the burial ground of the Hindus at Kandhal near here. In a representation made to Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar here on Thursday, the president of the Association, N.Sreenivasan, urged for ensuring that the Kandhal facility and burial grounds at Mink Shola, Kodappamund and Lovedale were kept free of encroachments.-Special Correspondent

Tamil University convocation on March 2

Thanjavur: The fourth convocation of Tamil University will be held on March 3.

The Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, who is also the Chancellor of the University would distribute degrees to students, a press release issued by Tamil University said.

A. Sivathanupillai, scientist would deliver the convocation address. C.V.Shanmugham, Education minister would participate in the convocation. Two hundred and twenty students would get their post-graduate degrees while 361 candidates would get their M.Phil degrees. One hundred and thirtyfive candidates would get their Ph.Ds.

The Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, who is also the chancellor of the University will participate in the convocation and distribute degrees to students.

Awareness programmes

KARUR: The Gandhigram Trust has planned to conduct awareness programmes on `food adulteration' and on `bird watching' under the CLEAN-India programme for schools students in the district.

The awareness programme on food adulteration would be conducted on February 4 for students of the CSI Boys HSS, Municipal HSS and the Municipal Kumaran HSS at the CSI Boys HSS and the programme on bird watching would be conducted on February 11 for the same school students at the Municipal HSS, according to the secretary of the Trust, M.R. Rajagopalan.

Cycle rally to Bangalore

Thanjavur: Followers of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of Vyakthi Vikas Kendra and trainer of Art of Living, will take out a cycle rally from Papanasam to Bangalore on Friday to take part in the silver jubilee celebrations of the Art of Living group to be held on February 17, 18 and 19.

The cyclists will travel through Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Karur, Salem, Hosur, and Bangalore to reach Jakoor air station.

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.65 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 1,331 cusecs and the outflow, nil. — Staff Reporter

Student's body recovered

TIRUNELVELI: The body of the Industrial Training Institute student, who drowned in the Thamirabarani on Wednesday, was recovered on Thursday.

Police said Rasool (17) of Kayalpattinam in Tuticorin district was studying in an ITI here. When he was taking bath in the Thamirabarani on Wednesday, he drowned. Though rescue efforts were launched immediately, he could not be traced. In this backdrop, the body of Rasool was found near the banks of the river on Thursday and it was sent for post-mortem.

The Tirunelveli Junction police have registered a case.

Ration for forest personnel distributed

TIRUNELVELI: Distribution of ration at subsidised rate for the forest personnel began on Thursday.

Life term for murder

Tuticorin: The Fast Track Court Judge, P Pandurangan, on Thursday sentenced P. Shanmugasamy to life imprisonment for murdering his wife here in 2002.

Shanmugasamy married Avadiammal (40) about 22 years ago and they were living near Puthiampudur. Quarrel erupted between them during the start of the millennium, when Shanmugasamy started suspecting his spouse's fidelity. The relationship deteriorated and on May 20,2002, he killed his wife with a sickle.

Poll roll revision

Nagercoil: Collector Sunil Paliwal has sought the cooperation of leaders of all political parties for the publication of final electoral rolls on February 27.

Presiding over the all party meeting conducted here on Thursday in connection with the modalities to be adopted for the special summery revision of electoral rolls, he said that there were 169,825 voters including 84,711 women in Kanyakumari Assembly constituency, 180,649 voters including 89,663 women in Nagercoil Assembly constituency, 166,677 voters including 81,205 women in Colachel Assembly constituency, 151,931 voters including 74,848 women in Padmanabhapuram Assembly constituency, 162,496 voters including 80,667 women in Thiruvattar Assembly constituency, 188,810 voters including 94,534 women in Vilavancode Assembly constituency and 150,087 voters including 73,710 women in Killiyoor Assembly segments.

There were 1299 polling stations in all the seven Assembly constituencies.

House burgled

ERODE: Unidentified persons entered the farmhouse of a former Madras High Court Judge and decamped with

Rs. 43,000 after tying the inmates on Thursday morning.

Police said six persons, with their faces covered, entered the house of K.S. Palanisamy, located at Kuttapalayam near Kolanalli within the Malayampalayam Police Station limits, and after tying him and his son, Dr. Sakthivadivel, took away the cash kept in the house.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Manjunath, and the Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan, visited the spot.
