Award for poetess

Hyderabad: Urdu poet and social activist, Jameela Nishat, has been selected for the seventh Sadguru Gyanananda award by Chennai-based Manava Seva Dharma Samvardhani. Former Election Commissioner T.S. Krishna Murthy will present the award on February 4 in Chennai. Ms. Nishat is the director of Shaheen Women's Research and Welfare Association. — Staff Reporter

JAC demand

HYDERABAD: The Joint Council of Action of Central Government Employees, AP, South Central Railway region has demanded immediate announcement on payment of interim relief (IR) and acceptance of 19 pending demands.

It wanted the Cabinet sub-committee and the Cabinet Secretary to have a negotiated settlement on the demands. Until then, the Central Government employees would go ahead with the proposed indefinite strike from March 1.

`Chair of Excellence'

ELURU: S.K. Rao, Director General, Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad, has been chosen for the `Chair of Excellence' award for 2006 instituted by Sir C.R. Reddy College. SCR freight record

HYDERABAD: South Central Railway achieved the best-ever originating freight loading performance during January in the current financial year, registering a record 5.9 million tonnes. This is the highest-ever for any single month.

Call for class boycott

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association has called for boycott of classes in colleges across the State on February 4 to press the demands of students belonging to BC communities, including payment of scholarships to every applicant. R. Krishnaiah, president, said students after boycotting classes should stage dharnas at collectorates and mandal offices. — Special Correspondent

Order on teachers' NOC

HYDERABAD: Teachers with passports and wishing to go abroad need not secure no-objection certificates from the Director of School Education. Orders to this effect were issued by the department, according to AP Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union. District Education Officers can sanction three months leave for these teachers. New RTC union chief

HYDERABAD: M. Nageswara Rao, general secretary in the erstwhile Transport Mazdoor Sangh was on Thursday elected working president of the APSRTC National Mazdoor Union. It may be recalled that it was only with a view to score over rival unions - APSRTC Employees Union and Staff and Workers Federation, affiliated to the Communist Party of India and CPI-M, respectively, the Transport Mazdoor Sangh merged with the NMU and ceased to exist as an independent union. — Staff Reporter

Red sanders seized

Nellore: The police at Dakkili have seized a lorry carrying red sanders valued at Rs. 4 lakhs.

Acting on a tipoff, they combed the Mittavaddipalle village on suspicion. However, the smugglers who were already alerted abandoned the lorry and left the scene. The police who reached the scene brought the lorry along with the material to the police station. - Staff Reporter

Incentive for social marriage

Nellore: The State Government has made available the required funds for encouraging inter-caste marriages, for which an incentive of Rs. 10,000 is given for each couple. Forms are available free of cost with the Assistant Social Welfare Officers and the applicants had to enclose caste and marriage certificates. However those who got married more than three years ago were not eligible for the incentive. It was stated that if a couple intimated the authorities at least three weeks before marriage, the incentive would be handed over at the marriage venue. -- Staff Reporter

Million jobs plan proposed

KURNOOL: The district Collectors' conference projected a million jobs programme to the Government recently. The Government was said to have accepted the programme considering that the Congress Government touched all sections of society with its development schemes except youth.

Under the programme, youth would be provided training vocations and helped for placement. An exclusive officer is likely to be posted to each district to monitor the programme.

Merchants' body leader ends life

KADAPA: Martala Venkata Ramachandra Reddy (55), president of the Pattabhirama Mandi Merchants Association, committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his house in Sai Kutir road in Proddatur town on Wednesday. He had no financial problems and could have resorted to the extreme step owing to family problems, police said. - Staff Reporter

Plea to protect ancient buildings

Kakinada: The East Godavari district unit of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural heritage, at its general body meeting here on Thursday with Lakkaraju Seshukumari in the chair, resolved to suggest to the Government to protect ancient buildings. It wanted the buildings in which Sir Arthur Cotton resided at Dowlesweram, the Old Port Directors' bungalow and other Dutch and British buildings to be protected as monuments. The meeting said that the compound wall of Brahmopasana Mandir here should not be demolished for road widening programme. — Correspondent

Free medical camp

Rajahmundry: A free medical camp was held here on Thursday by Rock Church of India, Butchaiah Nagar. Reverend Bill Smalt and Mark Lipsconch inaugurated the camp and P. John Lazarson supervised the arrangements. Doctors of different wings examined patients and gave them medicines. — Staff Reporter

Attack on media condemned

Rajahmundry: The Rajahmundry Press Club has condemned the assault on mediapersons on Wednesday night. In a statement on Thursday, Press Club president V.S.S. Krishna Kumar, secretary G. Sampat Samartin, vice-president Bhaktavatsalam and joint secretary V. Diwakar warned those who attacked the media and asked the police to file cases against them. — Staff Reporter

State-level maths test

Rajahmundry: Sri Gowthami Public School is going to conduct state-level mathematics talent test for 9th and 10th students on Saturday in Dharmanchara Community Hall, Prakashnagar.

In a statement on Thursday, the Correspondent of the school Sunkara Ravi Kumar said that the test is would be attended by M. Mahadevan of Association of Mathematics Teachers of India, Chennai. He said that State-level seminar would also be conducted the same day. — Staff Reporter

Kakinada: At the free veterinary camp organised by the Animal Husbandry Department at Gollapet area in Jagannaickpur here on Thursday, 244 cattle were examined and administered free medicines.

Wetlands Day observed

Kakinada: District Educational Officer M. R. Prasanna Kumar has underscored the need to protect wetlands to safeguard environment and preserve ecological balance. Participating as the chief guest at a function held at the District Science Centre here on Thursday to mark the celebration of World Wetlands Day, he said the wetlands prevented the water sources from drying up. L. Prathap Reddy of JNTU College of Engineering presided. The MPP of Thallarevu Mandal M.G. Suryanarayana flagged off an awareness rally at Corangi near here. — Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: While hailing the Prime Minister's announcement that steps would be taken for constituting the Sixth Pay Commission for Central Government employees, the East Coast Railway Shramik Union, however, said there was no change in the proposal to go on strike from March 1. Agricultural officer in ACB net

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Thursday arrested an agricultural officer M. Subramanyam, working in Avanigadda mandal of Krishna district, at his office on charge of receiving Rs. 2,000 bribe from a complainant. The amount was recovered from his possession, a press release said. He was being produced before the Court of Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases at Vijayawada. The officer was accused of demanding the bribe to renew the complainant's fertilizer shop license. - Staff Reporter

ADDANKI: Ganapathi Sachithananda Swami has said that life is a beautiful gift of god and it is intended to be placed at god's feet as a dedicated flower.
