Chandy expects more foreign investment

DUBAI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has expressed the hope that the State will receive substantial foreign investment following his meetings with international business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Chief Minister, on a stopover in Qatar, said Saudi Arabia and some African and European countries had shown keen interest in exploring joint venture projects in Kerala's Tourism, especially health and eco-tourism, and the IT sector. "We expect high-level delegations from at least 10 countries in the next six months," he was quoted as saying by the `Peninsula' daily. - PTI

Naval officer honoured

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Commander S. Girish Kumar (Indian Navy), Staff Officer to Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (New Delhi), has been awarded Vishisht Seva Medal by the President of India, on the occasion of Republic Day. Commander Girish Kumar, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, who joined Indian Navy in December, 1977, has held important appointments such as Staff Officer to Director General, Medical Services (Navy) and Project Co-ordinator, Indian Naval Hospital `Asvini' (Mumbai) and Officer-in-Charge, Medical Informatics. — Staff Reporter

MDS rank list published

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations has published the provisional rank list of candidates who have qualified for admission to the MDS courses-2006. The rank list has been prepared on the basis of the entrance examinations held in Thiruvananthapuram on January 21, a press note issued here on Thursday said. The first rank in the entrance examination goes to Dr. Anil Abdul Kaphoor. — Staff Reporter

Debating contest

KOLLAM: This year's inter-collegiate debating contest for the Thoppil Ravi Memorial Rolling Trophy will be held at the Public Library Hall at 9 a.m. on February 8. The contest will be in Malayalam. Those interested are requested to arrive with an authorisation from the respective principal and be present at the library hall by 9 a.m. on February 8. In addition to the trophy, the winners will be given individual trophies and cash prizes. — Staff Reporter.

Magic show for charity

KOLLAM: Valley View Gardens, a private builders group, is organising a week-long magic show programme by magician P.C. Sorcar. Proceeds from the show will be utilised to extend financial help of Rs.15,000 each to five students in the district who had contracted AIDS. The show from February 13 to 18 will be held at the Sopanam Auditorium. The organisers said that it is after a gap of 25 that Mr. Sorcar is coming to Kollam. - Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The district unit of the Akhila Kerala Brahmana Federation will give a reception to All India Brahmin Federation president Kota Shankara Sharma when he arrives here on February 5 leading a Bharat yatra christened `Brahmanda garjanam.' Kollam unit's general secretary N.K. Balasubramaniam and reception committee convener N. Hariharan said here on Thursday that Mr. Sharma would be welcomed with `purna kumbhom' at 7.30 a.m. in front of the Kottarakulam Sri Maha Ganapathi Temple. - Staff Reporter

AISF activists

stage protest

ALAPPUZHA: Activists of the All India Students Federation (AISF) staged a demonstration on Thursday against the proposed Global Education Summit at the venue of a public meeting in Alappuzha in connection with the `Clean Alappuzha-Save Alappuzha programme.' The AISF workers waved black flags at Ministers M.K. Muneer and K.C. Venugopal. They were later removed by the police. The Alappuzha police have taken into custody nine persons in connection with the incident. AISF workers waved black flags at Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman at Cherthala at a public function organised in connection with the inauguration of Cherthala mini-civil station. — Staff Reporter
