Srikakulam : A meeting of the Telugu Desam Party's BC cell demanded withdrawal of the GO. No. 23, which was aimed at deleting some castes from the BCs' list. The meeting was preceded by a rally organised by the district unit of the BC cell of the TDP at Dr. Ambedkar stadium here on Thursday. President of the State unit BC cell of the party R. Ramachandraiah was present. District president Balaga Nageswara Rao presided over the meeting.
Government blamed
TDP's leader in the Lok Sabha Kinjarapu Yerran Naidu mounted a scathing attack on Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's Government for taking steps to suppress the legitimate demands of BCs for the simple reason that they had been supporting the TDP. Mr. Naidu pointed out that various Commissions appointed by successive Governments had said that BCs' population in the State was 52 percent. But now the Congress Government, headed by Dr. Reddy, wanted to reduce it to a mere 30 per cent with the view to denying benefits to the BCs, Mr. Naidu said.
Plea to BCs
He called upon all BC leaders, including those in the Congress, to come out and lead the agitation for BC's welfare: "We are prepared to follow you."

He also recalled the steps taken by founder of the TDP N.T. Rama Rao for the welfare of the BCs. It was leaders like Gouthu Latchanna, hailing from Srikakulam district, who successfully fought with the Central Government for reservations to BCs some 40 years ago, Mr. Naidu said. Now the Congress Government wanted to do away with such reservations on the specious ground that some castes were already developed. MLAs--Gouthu Shyam Sundar Sivaji, Kinjarapu Acheyya Naidu, party's district unit president, Tammineni Sitaram and general secretary Kalamata Venlata Ramana were present.
