"Withdraw decision on parking fee hike"

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has charged that by bowing down before Capital's parking mafia the Municipal Corporation of Delhi would be victimising 45 lakh vehicle owners in the city. As such he has demanded that the Corporation immediately withdraw its decision to raise parking charges and provide relief to the vehicle owners by fixing Rs. 5 as the rate for four-wheeler owners and Rs. 2 for two-wheelers for the first four hours of parking.

Control of mafia

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Vardhan said in 2005 the MCD had implemented its widely publicised new parking policy, which the parking mafia refused to obey. It went on charging Rs 10 for the first four hours from four-wheelers and Rs 7 for the first four hours from two wheelers. Also the mafia refused to purchase and operate the system with manually operated time entry machines called simputers.

And now, rather than coming down heavily on the parking agents for the violations, Dr. Vardhan said MCD has sought to implement the rates that were being charged by the parking mafia. Under this policy, he said, a four-wheeler owner will have to pay Rs. 10 even for parking for five minutes while Rs. 20 will have to be shelled out for parking for 24 hours.
