Flight delays hit 61 p.c. of travellers

Special Correspondent

A survey shows majority of passengers do not want use of cell phone onboard

  • Long security check queue annoy 28 per cent of the travellers
  • Japanese travellers most comfortable with online bookings

Bangalore: You are not alone in complaining about flight delays and long lines at airport security checks.

A survey of business travellers across the Asia-Pacific region shows that flight delays affect 61 per cent of travellers in India, Japan and Australia, "frequently or occasionally". Those in China are most affected by long security lines at airports. And a majority of business travellers do not want cell phone use allowed during flights.

These are among the findings of the Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT), a global business travel survey that samples opinions of 2,100 business travellers and 650 travel managers in 12 countries. Respondents in Asia Pacific reported similar reactions and concerns.

In terms of travel experience with a negative impact, 28 per cent business travellers say long security lines frequently affect them and 23 per cent say flight delays frequently do. While most airlines now encourage online bookings for better margins, Japanese travellers are most comfortable with this and 75 per cent of them do their bookings online. In India, 17 per cent go for online bookings compared to 55 per cent in Australia.

Low cost airlines are not just for the budget conscious any longer.

Around 66 per cent of business travellers report having used a low cost carrier at some time and 14 per cent do so frequently.

China and Japan do not have low cost carriers, but in Australia and India combined, 16 per cent of travellers use them for more than 60 per cent of their business travel.

For many travelling to the smaller cities in India, the low-cost carriers are often the only option.
