Kidney racket kingpin remanded

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The alleged kingpin of the illegal kidney transplant racket smashed by the New Delhi police in September 2004 was arrested at Muzzaffarpur in Bihar and produced in a city court on Thursday. The court remanded him to police custody for interrogation.

The accused, Sanjay Singh, is the grandson of a former Member of Parliament from Muzzaffarpur. It is learnt that the local police arrested him a couple of days ago and handed him over to the New Delhi police.

Earlier, the New Delhi police had arrested about 10 people in connection with their involvement in the kidney racket allegedly run by Sanjay in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

During interrogation, Sanjay's accomplices had revealed that he himself used to strike deals with those needing kidneys. He had alleged links with the staff of various hospitals, through whom he would come to know about people in need of kidneys for transplant.

He would then arrange donors posing as relatives of the patients and get the job done against huge amount of money. In several cases, the police found that the donors were not even given the promised amount.
