Kochi heading for adequate, quality IT space

Staff Reporter

Muthoot, Leela, L&T among major players

KOCHI: From the home-grown Muthoot Pappachan group to Larsen and Toubro, Kochi is heading for a time when it might just be able to meet the rising demand for adequate and quality IT space over the next two to three years.

While the focus of the IT development in Kochi continues to be the Government-owned Infopark, private players are headed for Kochi.

These companies are taking advantage of the liberal policies adopted by the State Government in promoting IT infrastructure.

The Leela Group, as part of its diversification of its activities in Kochi, was one of the first groups to take advantage of the new investment atmosphere.

The group had already commissioned the first phase of the Leela Infopark in Kakkanad. Leela has planned its venture over three phases even as the 1.36 lakh sq ft space in the first phase has been taken up by Outsource Partners International, an accounting outsourcing company and IBS, software solutions providers.

In the second phase, the group will build 3.5 lakh sq ft of IT space and it is expected to be ready in a year-and-a-half.

Technopolis, a 3.5 lakh-sq ft IT complex coming up at the Cochin Special Economic Zone is being promoted by the Muthoot Pappachan group. This is the first venture in which a private player has used space in the Special Economic Zone to build IT space. The facility is likely to be commissioned in a couple of months.

The Rs.1,500-crore Smart City project is expected to be another major IT space provider along with Larsen and Toubro that is commencing work on a Rs.100-crore, two-phased project immediately.

Agreement between the Government of Kerala and the Dubai Internet City will be signed shortly, said IT Secretary to the Government of Kerala P.H. Kurien here.
