NEW DELHI: The canvas of the art world just got bigger. Bringing to the Capital masterpieces from the bold strokes of F.N. Souza to the beautifully real Raja Ravi Varma, Osian's gives art lovers plenty of reasons to drool. With its masterpieces series auction in the city slated for March 1, all the big names of the art world will have a price tag. While the auction will be only for serious collectors, it is a reason to celebrate for those who are interested in art. A prized collection that would usually find a place on the walls of museums, it has works by M.F. Husain, J. Swaminathan, Rabindranath Tagore and even the only non-Indian navratna Nicholas Roerich. A painting by the late Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam also finds its place in the collection. Bearing her trademark style, "Village Scene" is an oil painting made way back in 1938. Having created their name on the art scene to mean serious business, Osian's auction is another of its attempt to make the ephemeral world of art understandable in the country. Apart from the masters of the old world, the collection also has plenty of paintings from the new giants in the modern age. While Souza's "Lovers" is part of the collection, a woman in white sprawled across a blue-bedspread by Jogen Chowdhury in ink and pastel also finds space among the masterpieces. Akbar Padamsee's "Nude", a woman in black, and S.H. Raza's colourful canvas of Kashmir are also works that will certainly interest art collectors. While there will be a preview of the collection in Mumbai earlier in February only by appointment, the preview in the Capital will be on February 22. Being held at Alliance Francaise in Lodhi Estate, it is a chance for those with plenty of savings to spend for an art cause.
