Kozhikode: Forests and Environment Minister A. Sujanapal will inaugurate a food festival being organised in connection with the Malabar Mahotsavam at the Marine Grounds on the Kozhikode beach at 5.30 p.m. on Sunday. Almost all five-star and three-star hotels, apart from the best restaurants in the city, will participate in the food festival offering the best of Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Arabian, Continental and Mughalai cuisines, organising committee chairman N.B. Krishna Kurup and O. Subramanian told a press conference here on Friday.
Salient features
The salient features of the festival include stalls offering 40 types of dosas, 10 payasams and 15 types of puddings. Eating and cooking competitions will be held on all the days of the festival, which will conclude on February 12, the organisers said. Cultural programmes will be organised in the evenings. Entry to the festival for children up to five years of age will be free. Adults will have to pay a fee of Rs.5 a person.
Folklore festival
As part of the Malabar Mahotsavam, a folklore festival will be held at the Mananchira Square. Artistes will perform Mudiyettu, folk songs, Chimmanakkali and Adivasi dances. The festival will begin with a Thayambaka performance by Balussery Sukumaran and party at 5.30 p.m. on February 10. It will be followed by a Mudiyettu performance by Keyillam Unnikrishnan. V.M. Kutty and party will stage an Eshal Nilavavu performance comprising Oppana, Duffamuttu and Mappila dance and songs.
Song and dance
The Vadakara-based Folklore Centre will perform folklore songs on February 11. Pallikkara Kunhiraman and Narayankulam Balan will lead the programme. Aamu Gurukkal and his troupe will present a Kolkkali, Kannur Kumaran and party, Chimmanakkali and Adivasis from Attappadiy, tribal dances on February 12.
Festival committee
A festival committee with T.P. Ramakrishnan as chairman, T.V. Balan as vice-chairman and Kattyattu Venugopalan as general convener and deputy collector Devadas as convener has been formed in this regard. Chennai-based danseuses Shailaja will present a Kuchuppudi, Roja Kannan, Bharatanatiyam and Kalamandalam Sugandhi , Mohiniyattam. The dance festival will be held at the Padmasree Kalyanamandapam at 7.30 p.m. on February 10, 11 and 12.
