MATTANNUR: The Kannur University Union festival got off to a colourful start at Pazhassi Raja NSS College here on Friday. Organisers of the three-day cultural event sought to give a special significance to the fest as it coincided with the 200th anniversary of the martyrdom of Pazhassi Raja who had fought a relentless battle against the British till his death. One of the venues where the events are being held has been named after Pazhassi Raja. The cultural fete was inaugurated by the film actor Sudheesh; Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan; former school youth festival top-scorer Athira R. Nath; the playwright Ibrahim Vengara; and the artist K.K. Marar in the afternoon. Competitions are being held in classical dance, chenda, Kathakali, Ottamthullal, Yakshaganam, drama and classic music on the first day of the festival. Nearly 1,500 students from around 80 colleges in Kannur, Kasaragod and Wayanad districts are expected to participate in the festival. This year, the organisers introduced an open forum to be held on Saturday afternoon as a platform for ensuring interaction between the participating artistes and the public. The campus and the nearby areas will wear a festive look till the conclusion of the festival on Sunday. Following are the names of first, second and third prize winners in that order in different items:
