Emigration Act to be amended

Staff Reporter

KOCHI : The Emigration Act would be amended to check illegal recruitment for jobs abroad, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said here on Friday.

At a press conference at the Office of the Protector of Emigration, he said the Government would recommend stringent punishment for those involved in illegal recruitment.

The Ministry had received many complaints. The amended Act would give more powers to the agencies monitoring the activities of agents. Steps would be taken to check exploitation of women landing in various countries after being cheated by recruitment agencies, he said.

Emigration offices would be computerised and an effective mechanism introduced to address the complaints. Recruitment agencies would be directed to provide details of the place and nature of employment provided to jobseekers.
