A realistic theme - baring the intrigues of coalition politics

`Lion' is an attempt to present, in a realistic manner, the manipulations and, of course, limitations of coalition politics.

Malayalam cinema has always been in the vanguard of the struggle against social evils. Unlike other regional or even national films, it has successfully portrayed burning issues such as drinking water scarcity, political degeneration, corruption among the police force, etc., on a commercial platform with big artistes. In Hindi or Tamil cinemas, these issues are kept on the fringes, with stories of love or revenge taking centre stage. `Lion' is an attempt to present, in a realistic manner, the manipulations and, of course, limitations of coalition politics.

The story revolves around a young, dynamic and honest upcoming politician, Krishna Kumar (Dileep). He faces stiff opposition from his father in the role of Minister Bal Gangadhar Menon (Kalashala Babu) and his two corrupt and enterprising brothers-in-law — senior IPS officer Pavithran (Saikumar) and IAS officer Gopinathan (Shammi Tilakan).

However, the twists of coalition politics pitch Krishna Kumar to the post of Home Minister and he sets out on a task of cleaning the Augean stables of society. In the bargain, his father has to pay a heavy price.

Kalashala Babu has essayed his rather lengthy role in a brilliantly carved out manner. Dileep is at ease in his role of a fiery politician and, as usual, cuts conveniently to shades of mimicry in between. Sarika (Kavya Madhawan) who dons the role of a teacher and, of course, lover is stereotyped. Saikumar has ensconced himself as villain while Riaz Khan shows great promise. Shobha Mohan has put in a remarkable performance as Dileep's mother.

In all, Joshi has come out with a clean and fine entertainer.
