Call to protect AMU's minority status

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : Prof. Bhim Singh, chairman of the National Panthers Party, on Friday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene to ensure that the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) remained a minority institution.

He said the university was established with the noble objective of spreading education among the Muslim fraternity by Sir Syed Ahmed. After Independence, AMU represented the secular identity of the nation and contributed to the promotion of national integration. Prof. Singh appealed to all political parties having representation in Parliament to help restore the minority status of AMU.
