JD(S) must drop its suffix: Congress

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : The Congress on Friday suggested that it was time for the Janata Dal (Secular) of H.D. Deve Gowda to drop the suffix `secular' and said that its coalition partner in Karnataka was offered the Maharashtra model power sharing arrangement.

``We addressed the issue, had a detailed meeting at the highest level and offered Maharashtra model of power sharing,'' party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said at a regular briefing.

The people of Karnataka had given a mandate to the coalition to keep out the non-secular forces. Those who believed in politics of defection and opportunism had undermined the spirit of the people's verdict, he said.

The Congress, while wishing the new Government the best, reminded it that a formation which comes to power on the ``quicksand'' of defection and opportunism cannot promise stability.

Mr. Sinvghi observed that the JD (S) chief Deve Gowda had been self-critical and introspecting. ``Who knows what he can work out tomorrow.''
