Chennai teams advance

Namakkal: Chennai teams booked the last four berths in the men and women's sections of the 15th State-level basketball tournament at the South School grounds here on Friday.

Indian Bank, BSNL, ICF and Southern Railway are the teams from Chennai that have made it to the semifinal league in the men's section.

So did Golden Eagle, All Star, Vayudooth and Rising Star (all from Chennai) from the women's category.

The results:

Men: Southern Railway Sports BC (Chennai) 45 bt Texcity BBC (Karur) 26; BSNL (Chennai) 73 (Sivarajan 30) bt Writers BBC (Chennai) 68 (Cyrus 19); ICF BBC (Chennai) 72 (Boopalan 18, Sikkanthar 15) bt Sparks BBC (Salem) 60 (Balamurugan 25, Anantha Kumar 17).

Women: All Star BBC (Chennai) 42 (Prithi 17) bt SAI Sports Hostel (Salem) 22 (Alagi 18); Golden Eagle BBC (Chennai) 54 bt Dr. L.M. Ramakrishnan BBC (Erode) 32; Vayudooth BBC (Chennai) 52 (Prabha 17) bt Annai Theresa (BBC (Madurai) 32 (Kavitha 16); Rising Star BBC (Chennai) 48 bt Sun Flower BBC (Chidambaram) 22.

Sethu Institute triumphs

At Madurai: Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti lifted the Karumuttu Thiagarajan Memorial Trophy defeating Park College of Engineering, Coimbatore by a solitary goal scored by Akshai in the 24th minute in the final of the state-level inter-Engineering College hockey tournament conducted by Thiagarajar College of Engineering here on Friday.

In the third place match, host Thiagarajar College of Engineering beat Mahalingam College of Engineering, Pollachi 2-0. Balasubramanian and Sivakumar scored.

In the semifinals, Sethu Institute beat T.C.E. 5-0 via tie breaker, after the teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time and Park College beat Dr. Mahalingam College 4-1 also via tie breaker, after the teams were level 1-1 at full time.

Big win for Tiruchi

At Thanjavur: Tiruchi scored a thumping 10-1 win over Pudukottai in the regional level hockey tournament here on Friday.

R. Paul and Rajapandi scored three goals each, while Murugan, Somabalan, Dhanapal and Killivalavan netted one each.

In other matches, Thanjavur bt Perambalur 2-0; Tiruvarur bt Nagapattinam 3-1; Pudukottai bt Cuddalore 5-0; Permabalur bt Nagapattinam 5-0 and Tiruchi bt Tiruvarur 6-0.
