CHENNAI : As the airport strike entered the third day on Friday, senior officials led by Chennai Airport Director S. Subramanian took over the duties of the house keeping staff, collecting used tea cups and cleaning the passenger concourse area. They also cleaned the overflowing garbage bins and the clogged toilets at the departure and arrival areas of the domestic terminal. "We wanted to set an example and keep the gateway clean and tidy", Mr. Subramanian said. Senior ranking Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials took the place of the rostered staff, who have deserted their work spots protesting the modernisation of Mumbai and Delhi airports. Mr. Subramanian praised the 25 officials who volunteered to participate in the exercise. "Our officials came up with this spontaneous gesture as the manpower requested from the municipal body and the private cleaning contractor were prevented from entering the terminal building by the striking union members." Mr. Subramanian said while export cargo clearance was now 100 per cent, the AAI hoped to restore normal operations on the import side as well. On Friday, whatever import consignments were received were cleared, he claimed.
