CHENNAI: Georgie Abraham, founder-trustee of the TANKER foundation, was conferred the `For the sake of honour' award for the year 2006 by the Rotary Club of Ambattur. S.P. Thyagarajan, vice-chancellor of the University of Madras, handed over the citation at the event held here on Tuesday evening. Dr. Abraham was felicitated in the citation for being the `finest practitioner' of the Rotary motto of `Service above Self.' He is the founder of the Tamil Nadu Kidney Research Foundation (TANKER).
Innovation
Dr. Thyagarajan said that he has been one of the people who have made India synonymous with innovation. He recalled that till around a decade ago, those who could afford it would go abroad for the simplest of operations. Now there was a boom in medical tourism with foreigners coming to use the quality healthcare services available here, he said. Latha A. Kumaraswami, Executive Director-Marketing, Quadra Press Ltd., who has been associated with TANKER since inception, felicitated Dr. Abraham for his capacity to form a bond with all his patients. He was also felicitated by P. Srinivasan, Managing Director, Lister Metropolis Clinical Lab and Research Centre, and Rekha Shetty, Managing Director, Far Star Distribution Network Ltd. Dr. Abraham responded saying that he found his underprivileged patients, who endured ill-health to earn precarious livings, to be truly inspiring heroes.
