CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj on Tuesday inaugurated an awareness camp on violence against/harassment of women in north Chennai. Mr. Nataraj pointed out that disputes in families often led to harassment of women. To tackle this problem, all-women police stations had been formed in the city. There were now 37 such stations in the city to help women victims. Besides, a mobile counselling unit had been launched recently. The unit had a lawyer, woman police inspector and a social worker to counsel victims. Sankara Narayanan of SNEHA, an NGO, said research showed that more women tried to commit suicide compared to men. This was particularly true of women from rural areas who settled in the city after marriage. Virgil D. Samy of Arunodhaya said more awareness camps should be conducted in the city. Maria Jayanthi of Sangamam said women should develop self-confidence to overcome their problems. T.K. Rajendran, Additional Commissioner of Police and E.M. Masanamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Washermanpet, participated.
