Arun Raj Rodrigues
MANGALORE: The Thomas Stevens Konkani Centre, Goa, and Carvalho House have selected Arun Raj Rodrigues, artiste and stage director for the `Varshada Kalakar' Award instituted by them for 2005. The award is given annually to a person who serves the cause of Konkani drama, music and folklore. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and a citation. A press release from Louis J. Pinto, president of Mandd Sobhann, Shaktinagar, here on Friday said Mr. Rodrigues is the convener of Mandd, the drama troupe of Mandd Sobhann. Mr. Rodrigues has acted in popular Konkani dramas such as "Mamma Retire Jaatha", "Ward Number Six", "Abrahamanche Yajnadaan", "Dakther Davyanch" and "Judas" (first monoact drama in Konkani).
Popular Konkani dramas
"Mamma Retire Jaatha", "Kuvalyachi Vaal" and "Ward Number Six" directed by him are regarded some of the most popular Konkani dramas. "Dakther Davyanch" and "Gustadi Gusthin" have been made into television serials. He has also directed popular street plays and children plays such as "Mother" based on life of Mother Teresa, the release says.
Function tomorrow
Thomazino Cardoza, former Speaker of Goa Assembly, will give away the award at a function to be held at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar, here on Sunday. The 50th programme of "Mainyalli Maanchi", the monthly theatre of Mandd Sobhann, will also be organised on the occasion. The Voice of Goa, a cultural troupe from Goa, will present a programme.
