HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has levied penalty on three of the four companies entrusted with road development works estimated at Rs. 30 crores.

S.L. Koshti, Superintending Engineer, HDMC, said that the penalty has been levied as per the tender norms for failure to complete the work according to the action plan.

As per tender norms, the HDMC has the right to levy a fine of 0.5 per cent per week on the shortfall following delay in road works, he said.

Chandragiri Construction Company, which took up works in Hubli (North) area, completed the works for Rs. 4.37 lakhs as against the target of Rs. 44.37 lakhs. As a result, asphalting work between Anandnagar and Manjunath Nagar is moving at a snail's pace.

The widening of Tikare Road and the road from Uday Hostel Cross to University Gate in Dharwad, being executed by N.S. Nayak and Company, is also very slow. Only works worth Rs. 32 lakhs against the target of Rs. 96 lakhs have been completed.

The progress in the asphalting work undertaken by B.T. Reddy and Company in Dharwad North region is also slow. Asphalting of the road from Mallasajjan Vyayam Shala to Betageri Road and from Basavanal Circle up to Shivaji Chowk has been slow. Against the cumulative financial target of Rs. 93.52 lakhs, the contractor has completed works worth Rs. 38.52 lakhs.

    Target surpassed

He said the work under the Hubli South package is going on at a fast pace. The company executing the work, Mahalalingashetty and Company, has completed works worth Rs. 70 lakhs surpassing the target of Rs. 65 lakhs.
