Tension in Meerut over eve-teasing

MEERUT: Tension gripped the congested old Meerut city on Friday as people from different communities clashed and indulged in stone-throwing over an alleged incident of eve-teasing here on Thursday night, police said.

Police and PAC contingents were deployed in the communally sensitive town in view of Friday prayers, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajiv Sabharwal said.

The police have arrested some suspects and cases were registered against them, he said.

The incident took place when some youths of another community tried to harass women in a marriage procession in the Mehmoodnagar locality of Lisani Gate area. The scene turned ugly as groups from both the communities clashed with each other and pelted stones.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, as some people were being rounded up today, an agitated mob clashed with the police protesting the arrests, the SSP said.

Police lathi-charged, fired rubber bullets and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the mob, in which four people were injured. - UNI
