Kottayam: Thiruvananthapuram blanked Pathanamthitta 4-0 in the opening match of the 35th State junior hockey championship held at the CMS College ground on Friday. Veeramani sounded the board thrice (27th, 28th &46th) while Vipin Das (36th) scored the completed the tally for the winner. Thrissur edged out Kollam 2-1 in another match. Suraj (9th) and Aneesh (10th) scored for Thrissur while Nishad reduced the margin for Kollam in the 14th minute. Bad light forced the Kottayam-Kozhikode encounter to be stopped. Kottayam was leading 1-0 at half-time through a goal from Ajayan (21st). The second half will be played on Saturday morning.
Indian Navy triumphs
KOCHI: Down by seven points at half-time, Indian Navy (Kochi) bounced back and won the men's title in the Thebasco all-Kerala basketball tournament at the Sacred Heart College floodlit courts, Thevara, on Thursday night. Navy defeated BSNL (Thiruvananthapuram) 83-76 in the final. Navy's Faizal was adjudged as the tournament's best player and Vipin, the most promising player. Good Morning Club (Thiruvananthapuram) won the veterans title, beating host Thebasco 84-69. Good Morning's Jose Kurian was selected as the best player in the section. The results (men's final): Indian Navy 83 (Faizal 30, Vipin 18, Settu 25) bt BSNL 76 (T.S. Abhilash 34, Bobit Mathew 17, Monish Wilson 16).
