THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Governor R.L. Bhatia, in his address to the Legislative Assembly on Friday, said the State Government would constitute a State sports welfare fund similar to the national sports welfare fund for the development and welfare of the sportspersons in the State. He said the government also had plans to establish a sports science centre in Ernakulam similar to the one operated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at its regional centre in Bangalore. The Governor said that the Kerala Sports Act 200, which was amended recently, will provide for wider representation and has enhanced the scope of functions for the Kerala State Sports Authority.
Camp for Kerala teams
The South Zone senior basketball championships will be held at the Nehru Stadium, Kottayam, from February 22 to 26. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Pondicherry and the Sri Lanka national team will take part in the five-day tournament, jointly organised by the YMCA and Kottayam District Basketball Association. The camp for the Kerala teams will begin on February 7. The men's camp will be held at the Don Bosco School, Venamala and the women's camp will be at Loude Public School, Ernakulam. Players who have been selected to attend the camp should report at the venue on February 7, according to V.C. Asif, secretary, Kerala Basketball Association.
Sports medicine
workshop
KOCHI: The Maharaja's College's Physical Education Department will organise a sports medicine workshop for physical education teachers and coaches at its premises from February 13 to 15. P.S.M. Chandran, Director of Sports Science (New Delhi), S.S. Hasrani, Principal of LNCPE (Thiruvananthapuram), and C.R.
