PALAYAMKOTTAI: Holder Mahatma Gandhi University, as was expected, retained its hold over all the three titles at stake as the 66th all-India inter-university athletic meet, organised by the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, concluded at the St. John's floodlit stadium here on Friday.

The final day's proceedings, like in the previous four days, failed to produce a new meet mark making it perhaps the first event to conclude without any new record being set. Consequently, there was little of note to write home about other than the sweep completed by the Kottayam side.

In the men's section, MGU finished on top with a tally of 27 points ahead of Maharishi Dayanand University, Rothak (20) and Gurunanak Dev University, Amritsar (17). The women's championship was annexed by MGU in a more comfortable fashion with a tally of 52 points. Calicut was second with 31 points and Punjab third with 14 points.

In the race for the overall championship title, MGU finished with an overwhelming tally of 79 points to complete its sweep. Calicut and Kerala finished in that order behind the champion side with 39 and 26 points respectively.

Rajasthan's long distance runner, Rati Ram was declared the best athlete among men, while the same honour in the women's section was shared by M.A. Prajusha (Calicut) and Asha Kumari (Himachal).
