Special Correspondent

Programme at Chinnalapatti advanced

SALEM: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's itinerary in Tamil Nadu on Saturday has been revised. His programme at Chinnalapatti in Dindigul district, scheduled either for February 7 or 8, has been advanced to February 4.

Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu, after inaugurating the media centre at Government Arts College here on Friday, told reporters that as per the new itinerary, Mr. Singh would leave for Chinnalapatti from Salem, immediately after laying the foundation for the Rs. 1,100 crore, four lane Salem-Chengapalli Highway at 4 p.m.

He would fly to Chinnalapatti and lay the foundation for the Rs. 1,500 crore, 258 kilometre four lane Samayanallur-Krishnagiri Highways project.

Mr. Baalu said the Rs. 352-crore Vaniyampadi-Pallikonda four-lane highway was ready for inauguration. The foundation would be laid for the four lane Rs. 420 crore Madurai-Trichy National Highway on February 6. He said 3,300 kilometres out of 4,212 kilometres were being converted into four-lane in Tamil Nadu.

Four-laning work on 7,639 kilometres had been undertaken in the north-eastern States. He hoped this would hasten economic development of the hill regions.

He said work on the Sethu Samudhram project was progressing as expected. Salem MP K.V. Thangkabalu was also present.
