Minister's clarification

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will discuss the proposal with all the persons concerned before taking a decision to include magic as an item in school arts festival, Education Minister E.T.Mohammed Basheer has said. Mr. Basheer issued a clarification in the wake of the disagreement aired by certain magicians. — Staff Reporter

Award presented to Swaminathan

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Attumalil Georgekutty Merit Award, instituted by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, was presented to M.S. Swaminathan, Chairman, National Commission on Farmers, at a function at the Church headquarters in Thiruvalla on Friday. The head of the Church, Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Metropolitan, presented the award, comprising a purse for Rs.1 lakh and a citation, to Dr. Swaminathan. Isaac Mar Phelexinos and Church secretary K.M. Mammen addressed the meeting.

Dr. Swaminathan delivered a lecture on `2006-07, Year of Agricultural Renewal' on the occasion. — Staff Reporter

Lok Ayukta notice

to Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: The Division Bench of Lok Ayukta has served notice on Minister for Transport N. Shaktan and his Additional Private Secretary Babu Rajendan on a complaint filed by CITU leader K.K. Divakaran. The bench comprising K. Sreedharan and K.A. Mohammed Shafi issued orders to immediately serve notice on Mr. Shaktan and Mr. Rajendran through a special messenger. They have been asked to appear before the court on February 8. — Staff Reporter

Kalam praises nursing students

Manila: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Friday praised Kerala for its core competence in the field of nursing. "I worked in Kerala for 20 years at the Space Research Centre in Thumba as a scientist and I know how the nurses of the State excelled in the profession," Dr Kalam said. Talking to students from the College of Nursing school, University of Philippines, the President said he was "equally moved" to know that the Philippines also produced the maximum number of nurses. — UNI

Seminar

KOLLAM: J. Mercykutty, national vice-president of CITU, will inaugurate a seminar on `Drinking water and the cashew sector' at Perumpuzha Junction, near here, at 5 p.m. on February 4. The seminar is being organised in connection with the three-day State conference of the Kerala Water Authority Employees Union, which begins here on February 8. — Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Bishop Thomas Samuel of the CSI Diocese of Madhya Kerala has said that the Government's decision to move forward on the issue of reservation without addressing the backlog of over 3,000 posts lost by Dalit Christmas during the past many years amounts to abject negation of their rights. According to him, there are nearly two-million Dalit Christians and their reservation share comes to only one per cent. The only way to correct the persisting anomaly is to hold special recruitment for them. He also asked the authorities to take all the stakeholders, including leaders of various communities, into confidence, before proceeding further in the matter. — Staff Reporter

Rubber Board elections

KOTTAYAM: The Rubber Board is updating electoral roll of rubber growers with large holdings as on August 1, 2005, as the term of the present Board expires on September 2, 2006, a press note said. The last date for effecting changes is February 20.

There will be four vacancies of these growers' representatives (one in Tamil Nadu and three in Kerala) on the Board in 2006 and elections to them will be conducted on the basis of the electoral rolls prepared as above. — Staff Reporter

Explosion in house

THRISSUR: Currency notes for Rs. 35,000 were burnt in an explosion that ripped through one of rooms of a house at Thalikkulam in the district. The house is of Manakkaparambil Adammu. Windowpanes, the ceiling, furniture and other articles were destroyed.

The cause of the explosion is not known immediately. Mr. Adammu, who is working in the Gulf, had come on vacation only a couple of days ago. Explosives experts are scheduled to visit the house on Saturday to examine the site and identify the cause. — Staff Reporter
