CHENNAI: Stolen properties worth Rs. 88 lakhs were restored to their owners by the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, on Thursday.

The recovered property included jewellery weighing 547 sovereigns, 11 kilos of silver articles, 40 motorcycles, a car, two autorickshaws, six wristwatches, 133 cellular phones, a camera and 10 electronic items.

Mr. Nataraj said the police had solved a total of 136 crime cases, which included one from 1999; two cases from 2003; four from 2004; 83 from 2005 and 46 from the current year. A total of 94 persons were arrested in this connection, he said.

Mr. Nataraj said that following the arrest of Baskar of Peravallur, police recovered 110 sovereigns of jewellery, 11 kilos of silver articles and four wristwatches from him.

With the arrest of Ghouse Basha (57) of Vellore, wanted in connection with 15 criminal cases in the city, police seized jewellery weighing 75 sovereigns, eight two-wheelers, 15 cellular phones and electrical and electronic goods totally worth Rs. 8.37 lakhs.

Ashok Nagar police recovered 28 two-wheelers stolen from residential areas in and around T. Nagar.

The vehicles were seized following the arrest of Baskar (39), Peter (45) and Raji (33).
