78 B.Ed colleges to lose minority status

Staff Reporter

Allegations against managements force State's hands

HYDERABAD: In what could be considered as a brave decision, the Government has decided to withdraw the minority status of B.Ed colleges that have failed to comply with the mandatory 70 per cent admissions from the minority category students and those who have admitted students deviating the existing norms.

However, students already admitted will not be penalised and their admissions would be approved. A high-level meeting attended by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday took a decision in view of the burgeoning allegations that the minority status had become a money-spinner for the managements.

Officials said 78 colleges are likely to get the axe if the Government goes ahead with its decision. According to them, 64 colleges out of the 115 have failed to fulfil the norm that 70 per cent of students have to be from the minority categories if the status has to be retained the following year. While another 14 colleges will lose the status due to the admissions done in deviation of norms.

APSCHE Chairman K.C. Reddy told The Hindu that colleges that have failed to follow the G.O.s and court directions on admissions were likely to be disaffiliated. The Government would write to the NCTE and the universities, seeking withdrawal of recognition as they violated the existing norms.
