Doordarshan kendra bags award

HYDERABAD : Doordarshan kendra, Hyderabad, has bagged the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Annual Award in the category of `development issues.' The award is sponsored by the World Bank.

The feature that won the award was produced by Emani Krishna Rao, Special Correspondent, Doordarshan.

It was about how women groups of Deccan Development Society, representing the poor in the Deccan region of the State, have brought back large extent of degraded land into cultivation and stringently followed the principles of crop diversity. - Special Correspondent

Support to air staff stir

HYDERABAD : Employees of various public sector banks in the city staged a lunch-hour demonstration in front of Central Bank of India on Friday in support of the striking employees of the Airports Authority of India against privatisation.

The demonstration was organised by the Andhra Pradesh Bank Employees' Federation.

Addressing the employees, B.S. Rambabu, general secretary of the federation, criticised the anti- employee and pro-privatisation policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. - Special Correspondent

Held on charge of killing mother

ADILABAD : A man was arrested by the Kagaznagar police on Friday for allegedly killing his mother Mahboob Bee,

According to the police, a labourer, Zakir, came home in the afternoon and asked his mother to serve lunch.

As there was delay, he got angry and allegedly hit his mother on the head by a wooden object killing her on the spot. - Staff Reporter

CPI(M) demand

HYDERABAD : CPI (M) secretary B.V. Raghavulu has urged the Government to protect the interests of minority students, who were denied admission to minority educational institutions.

Addressing the SFI State committee meeting here on Friday, Mr. Raghavulu demanded that the minority institutions, which failed to provide admission to minority students, should be punished.

He wanted their minority status to be withdrawn. - Special Correspondent

TDP's poser to State on Kalwakurthy

HYDERABAD : Telugu Desam Party has posed 18 questions to the Government on Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Project that is coming up for public debate on February 5 at Pebbair in Mahbubnagar district.

In a list sent to Principal Secretary of Irrigation, Telugu Desam Party MLA Sana Maruthi sought response on various issues.

He wanted to know if five motors of 30 MW each would discharge 5000 cusecs of water at high frequencies and whether the main canal and tunnels designed to carry this quantity. - Special Correspondent

11 held for alleged links with Maoists

KHAMMAM : Two scribes were among eleven persons arrested by the police in Yellandu town on Friday for their alleged links with the CPI (Maoist) and their association with its operations.

Superintendent of Police R.K. Meena said here that the accused, who included some militants, were party to certain major plans of the CPI (Maoist) aimed at striking terror in the region. - Staff Reporter

Principal charged with issuing fake certificates

GUNTUR : P. Srinivasa Rao, principal of a college, was arrested here on Friday for allegedly issuing fake certificates and promising students to send them for examination to be conducted by IASC Deemed University in Rajastan.

The Arundelpet police arrested him after conducting searches in his house and college premises in Brodipet from where they also recovered some fake certificates and rubber stamps. - Staff Reporter

Houses for poor

KADAPA: Sri Amruthananda Mayee will hand over keys of 1,000 houses being built with her own funds at Hyderabad and 200 houses at Proddatur to poor beneficiaries at Hyderabad on February 20 and 21. Two hundred and fifty Amruthananda Mayee housing colonies are being constructed in various parts of the country on behalf of her ashram, Swamy Sai Chaitanyananda told newsmen at Proddatur. She would visit Hyderabad and hand over keys of 250 houses being built at Sunnapurallapalle in Proddatur to the beneficiaries on the two days, he said.- Staff Reporter

Shepherd allegedly murdered

ANANTAPUR: Dispute between two shepherds led to the murder of one of them at Irikireddypalli village in Mudigubba mandal in the district on Friday. According to the police, the two shepherds belonged to Ambakapalle village in Lingala mandal of Kadapa district. Gaganna owed about Rs. 60,000 to Siddaiah and the former was allegedly beaten to death by the latter after an altercation.

SP inspects parade

KADAPA: Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy on Friday exhorted Armed Reserve personnel to gain expertise in parade and strive to secure first place in the State. He inspected AR personnel's mobilisation parade and their drill at police parade grounds here. Constables learn newer techniques while participating in parade for a fortnight, Mr. Nagi Reddy said. Additional SP M. Lakshmi Reddy, ASP Rana, Reserve inspectors and sub-inspectors also took part.- Staff Reporter

Minister to visit Kadapa

KADAPA: Minister for Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare D.S. Redya Naik will pay a week-long visit to Kadapa district from February 6. He will take part in Assembly segment-wise gram sabhas for Indiramma scheme and would supervise distribution of ration cards from February 6 to 12. He would leave for Hyderabad on February 12 night, according to an official statement.- Staff Reporter

Three killed in road accident

ANANTAPUR: Three persons were killed and four others were injured when a lorry in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree near Mannela village of Anantapur rural mandal on Friday. According to the police, a tamarind-laden lorry was on way to Adoni from Chennai when the accident took place. Driver Mastan Khan, passengers Rajasekhar and Veeranna were killed on the spot. - Staff Reporter

Sarpanch succumbs to injuries

KADAPA: Alidine Obayapalle sarpanch's husband Krishnaiah succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident near a petrol bunk at Kamalapuram. Krishnaiah's motorcycle was hit by a cement-laden lorry and was rushed to SVIMS at Tirupati with severe injuries on Wednesday. A close follower of TDP senior leader M.V. Mysoora Reddy, Krishnaiah succumbed to injuries on Thursday night. - Staff Reporter

Volunteer patrol bodies urged

ELURU: Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy instructed all the Station House Officers to constitute village-level voluntary patrolling committees with active involvement of local residents to counter dacoit gangs which were on the prowl in parts of West Godavari district.

Reacting to the voluntary gesture of self-patrolling offered by people inhabitants of Satavahana Nagar and New Ashoknagar on the city outskirts, the SP highlighted the need for replication of such `model policing' in other parts of the district also. - Staff Reporter

Commission agent robbed

ELURU: A paddy commission agent robbed of Rs 1.5 lakhs by an unidentified person here on Friday.

According to the police, the commission agent Damerla Nagamalleswara Rao from Garapadu in Krishna district came to a bank in the city to draw cash. When he kept his cash bag in the rear-side box of his TVS moped and went to a nearby phone booth to make a call, the miscreant opened the box and decamped with the cash bag. - Staff Reporter

BJP to hold `Palle pilupu'

VIZIANAGARAM: The district committee of Bharatiya Janata Party will organise "palle pilupu'' for a week from February 25 to enlighten people on the anti-people policies of the State and Central Governments.

The decision to launch the programme was taken at the party meeting held recently in Mahabubnagar.

During the week-long programme party workers would visit villagers, according to the party district president P.V.V. Gopala Raju.

VIZIANAGARAM: As per the call given by Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union (PRTU) large number of teachers in the district on Friday staged a dharna at the Collectorate demanding among other issue withdrawal of GO No.126 on leaves, payment of two notional increments and also revert to pension scheme on par with regular teachers to apprentice teachers. The PRTU State associate president K. Satya Rao, organising secretaries R.V.S.Subrahmanyam and B. Chiranjeevulu and district president G. Srinivasulu Naidu addressed the teachers, according to a release. - Correspondent

Teenaged girl commits suicide

Kakinada: A teenaged girl Vasamsetti Tulasamma (16) has allegedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at her house in Guttulavaripalem village near Nemam on Friday early hours.

She was rushed to the Government general hospital in a critical condition where she succumbed shortly after.

Parents quarrelling over performing of her marriage, reported to have led her to the extreme step. The Thimmapuram police have registered a case.

Man ends life

KAKINADA: In a similar incident, Madikada Chinni (30) a resident of Gurralavari Veedhi of Recherlapet colony under Kakinada Two Town Police Station limits has reportedly hanged himself from the ceiling following a petty quarrel with his wife on Friday.

A case was registered and the body was sent for post-mortem.
