NEW DELHI: Former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana on Friday said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to bring in an Ordinance in order to put an end to the ongoing demolition drive across the Capital. He also announced that BJP legislator Harsharan Singh Balli would sit on "fast unto death" from February 7 in protest against the demolitions and to demand regularisation of all unauthorised constructions. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Khurana also demanded grant of full Statehood to Delhi without any delay as the Select Committee headed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukerjee had already recommended it. He said the previous NDA Government had even presented a Bill in Parliament for granting Statehood to Delhi and had it come back to power, it would have certainly fulfilled that promise. "I request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to issue directions to the Ministry concerned to introduce the Statehood Bill so that the problems being faced by the residents are resolved without any delay," he added. Expressing surprise over the failure of the MCD and the Delhi Government to initiate criminal cases against the unscrupulous builders, Mr. Khurana said it was unfortunate that such illegal buildings were being registered by the authorities. "The name of the owner as well as the builder is also mentioned in the registered documents and the Government should identity such mafia and proceed against them immediately." He said if the people whose premises were being targeted by the MCD bulldozers were living illegally then why was the Corporation accepting property tax from such owners or tenants. "I have also written to the Prime Minister that an Ordinance on the lines of the Ulhasnagar legislation should be immediately brought in by the Union Government to save the people of Delhi from the hammers of the Corporation," he added. Mr. Khurana said action should also be taken against officials who took bribes and allowed such illegal buildings to come up.
