SP Ministers to attend Brahmin Mahakumbh

A reaction to BSP's plans, says State Commission for Women chairperson Ranjana Bajpai

Lucknow: Replicating the BSP's efforts to woo the Brahmin community, Ministers from the ruling Samajwadi Party will attend a `Viraat Brahmin Mahakumbh' in the neighbouring Sitapur district.

The February 5 `Mahakumbh' will thank Chief Minister and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for declaring a holiday on the birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram and launching the `Kanya Vidyadhan' scheme, which the event's organisers claimed, "helped girls from the upper castes as well."

Addressing the media here, State Commission for Women chairperson Ranjana Bajpai said the event was being organised by U.P. Sanatan Brahmin Samaj Sewa Sansthan.

"The CM will be felicitated at a similar event in Bareilly on February 11 by the members of Brahmin Samaj."

Ms Bajpai claimed the proposed `Mahakumbh' was a reaction to the BSP's plans to attract Brahmin electorate. "We demand dignity and respect...how can the BSP after abusing the community woo them back for electoral gains."

U.P. Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey, State Ministers Harishanker Tiwari (LCP), Ashok Bajpai, Rajaram Pandey (both SP), MLC Vikramaditya Pandey and Bhojpuri singer Manoj Tiwari will attend the event.

"We have already held two Brahmin sammelans and propose to hold such events in all the 70 State districts," Ms Bajpai added. She said since Brahmins were an educated community, they would not succumb to any cajoling or pressure from any political party. "We have a right to decide whom to support." -- UNI
