Paper mills seek uniform excise duty

Manufacturers want steps for expanding the existing capacities

  • Measures for revival of mills sought
  • Centre urged to provide technology upgradation fund
  • Plea for Government support to meet domestic demand

HYDERABAD : The Indian Paper Manufacturers' Association (IPMA) has favoured introduction of a uniform excise duty at 8 per cent across the industry to provide a level-playing field to all domestic players in the market.

IPMA president Rajeev R. Vederah told reporters here on Friday that the excise duty structure stood fractured by a slew of excise notifications issued since 2001 in disregard to the fact that ad hoc excise exemptions created serious distortions in the fragile paper market.

Levying 8 per cent excise duty would prove to be positive as excise uniformity prevents destabilisation of domestic market and brighten chances of revival of many mills presently facing closure.
