Move to form Coal Videsh Ltd.

Proposal sent to the Union Cabinet for consideration: Dasari


  • Steps initiated to increase domestic production of coal
  • 136 coal blocks identified for captive consumption by Coal India
  • VSP has been allocated Mahal blocks with reserves of 1,100 million tonnes

    VISAKHAPATNAM: To overcome the problem of limited reserves of good quality of coking coal and to enhance the energy security of the country, Coal India Limited is contemplating acquisition of coking coal properties abroad. A proposal for formation of Coal Videsh Limited will soon be sent to the Union Cabinet for its consideration, Dasari Narayana Rao, Union Minister of State for Coal, has said.

    Delivering the inaugural address at the Sixth India International Refractories Congress (IREFCON 2006) at the Vizag Steel Plant (VSP) on Friday, he said that in view of the projected demand of 1,300 million tons of coal by 2025 from the present 445 million tonnes, several measures were being initiated.
