HYDERABAD : The Labour Department is planning to adopt a three-tier approach to tackle the problem of streetchildren and the strategy envisages covering child trafficking, rehabilitation of the child labourers and their parents, creating awareness in society and importantly ensuring monitoring of the enforcement.
Details on Net
Labour Department Commissioner Karikal Valaven said the details of every child tracked and the steps taken for rehabilitation would also be put on the web for easy monitoring. He was speaking at a seminar on `streetchildren' organised by Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) here on Friday. Higher Education Principal Secretary P. Krishnaiah suggested that construction sites, slums, bus stands and railway stations where streetchildren were likely to be found should be targeted and children be admitted to transit centres.
Publicity campaign
A publicity campaign should also be launched to create awareness among educated people who engage children as domestic servants. ILO Project Manager I. Rani Kumudini felt that needs of streetchildren were different from children out of school and they should be trained by social activists. A sense of belonging should pervade in respect of facilities provided for street children. K. Chandramouli, State Project Director of SSA, said the two-day seminar would discuss the strategies to be adopted to infuse life into the lives of schoolchildren.
