Residents thank civic agencies

Residents of Virugambakkam convey their thanks for good work done but also seek better services

CHENNAI: A meeting to hear grievances from residents of Virugambakkam turned into a function to thank civic agencies on Monday.

It was a face-to-face meeting organised for residents' welfare associations of Virugambakkam by the Exnora Innovators Club.

A few civic problems such as irregular clearance of garbage, bad street lights and requests for more parks and police booths came up. However, the meeting ended on a hearty note.

The residents thanked Metrowater for regular supply of water to the sumps. They thanked the police for "the excellent service" rendered during the recent rains and the Electricity Board "for the good work they did."

M.B. Nirmal, founder, Exnora International, congratulated all the civic departments and Ravisankar Rasa, councillor, Division 65, Corporation of Chennai, for the various welfare measures undertaken in Division 65.

Ananthasayanam, president, SBI Colony Civic Exnora, wanted the Metrowater authorities to replace the lids of sewer manholes. Some of the manhole structures had sunk into the road and these should be raised to the road height. Residents of SBI Colony, Sai Baba Colony and Premier Grahalakshmi Apartment and Elango Nagar complained that garbage was being dumped on vacant lands.

S. Boominathan, assistant commissioner, Zone V, said nothing could be done to prevent garbage being dumped in vacant plots. The residents should ask plot owners to construct compound walls to prevent misuse. As for Kaliamman Koil Street, he said at present work to lay water pipelines had not been completed. Once the work was done, a new road would be laid within a month.
