CHENNAI: The Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital will soon have a new nine-storied complex, to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 crore, General Manager Thomas Varghese said here on Friday. Inaugurating the second annual conference of the Indian Railway Orthopaedic Association (IROA) here, Mr. Varghese said the new complex would be a well-equipped state-of- the-art building. It would also have a Rs 1.5-crore computer-based navigation orthopaedic surgery equipment soon. The new equipment would enable doctors to perform orthopaedic surgeries with more perfection and precision. Chief Medical Director G.C. Raju suggested opening of a medical colleges by the Railway Ministry in the railway hospitals at four metropolitan cities as they had good infrastructure and hospitals.
Best treatment
J.P. Jain, president of the IROA, said railway hospitals did not lag behind in providing the best orthopaedic treatment. Latest surgeries such as total hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty, spinal instrumentation surgery and arthroscopy were being performed in railway hospitals, he added. P. Raja Goundan, General Manager, Integral Coach Factory, hoped that the conference would help the doctors to update their knowledge. R.Gopinathan Nair, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, said the Perambur Hospital, one of the best in the south, was yet to get its due recognition. Its achievements in various medical fields were not given adequate publicity, he said. A. Elangovan, Medical Director, Perambur Hospital, said the Railway hospital was recognised by the National Board of Examinations.
