Thiruvananthapuram: Cleaning of the terminal buildings and the services to the passengers in the international airport here were affected on Friday owing to the nation-wide strike by Airports Authority of India employees to protest against the privatisation of Delhi and Chennai airports. Cleaning of the terminal buildings, toilets and airport premises had come to a standstill as the cleaning staff had joined the strike. The movement of the trolleys and the working of the conveyor belts had also been crippled following the strike as the staff of the electrical wing had joined the strike. Passengers were forced to physically carry the baggage for security check, check-in and emigration. The only solace is that the loaders of various airlines help in loading the baggage in the trucks for transporting them to the aircraft. According to the AAI Employees Union (International Wing) branch secretary, Sreejith, the non-working of conveyor belts had affected the movement of the flights. However, a top official of the AAI told The Hindu that all flights left as per schedule on Friday. The personnel of Kerala State Fire and Rescue Services and Air Force were pressed into service as 130 personnel of the AAI's fire service's wing had gone on strike. Meanwhile, the agitating employees shifted the venue of dharna to the parking area following the Delhi High Court directive.
